Emergency First Response Instructor (EFRI)
  • 2 day (16 hour) comprehensive course
  • Cost: $399 including EFRI crew pack (teaching materials)
  • Application Fee to PADI due upon completion: $127

  • You must be a Divemaster to attend an Emergency First Response Instructor (EFRI) course, an IDC, an Assistant Instructor course or an OWSI Course
  • In order to become a PADI Instructor, candidates must complete an Instructor Exam (IE) hosted by PADI International at various locations around the world.  Candidates must also have 100 dives.

Option 1

Instructor Development Course (IDC)
  • Complete online eLearning on your own time via the PADI website - Fee to PADI: $401
  • Complete a 5 day instructor course (40 hours), Cost: $999
  • Teaching Materials Required:  $599 (does not include the instructor manual, dm slates, dsd slates, and Encyclopedia of Recreational diving - these are normally provided in divemaster course.  If you do not have these, they can be purchased separately. )
  • Application Fee to PADI due upon attending an IE: $165

This option costs less & requires a little less time. 
However, it must be completed all at once.

Option 2

Assistant Instructor Course
  • Complete eLearning on your own time via the PADI website Fee to PADI: $401
  • Complete a 2 day AI course (16 hours), Cost: $399
  • Teaching Materials Required:  $599 (does not include the instructor manual, dm slates, dsd slates, and Encyclopedia of Recreational diving - these are normally provided in divemaster course. If you do not have these, they can be purchased separately)
  • Application Fee to PADI due upon completion of AI: $133​

Open Water Scuba Instructor Course
  • Complete a 3 day OWSI course (24 hours), Cost: $599
  • Application Fee paid to PADI due upon attending an IE: $165

The Instructor Exam (IE)
  • 2 day comprehensive exam conducted by PADI staff.
  • Must have 100 dives prior to attending.
  • Fee paid to PADI to attend: $650
  • Contact Rockfish Divers for a list of IE's around the globe - Complete the exam in Honduras, Thailand or other beautiful tropical destinations!!  Scheduled dates include:
  • Aug. 6th/7th - Edmonton, Ab.
  • Nov.12th/13th - Vancouver, BC
  • Dec. 10th/11th - Seattle, Wa.
  • With enough candidates we can host our own IE here in Victoria.
What can you do once becoming an OWSI?
Once you have completed the IE successfully, you will be an Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI).  As an OWSI, you are qualified to teach:
  • Discover Scuba Diving
  • Bubblemaker
  • Seal Team
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy
  • Project Aware Courses
  • Open Water Courses
  • Advanced Courses
  • Adventure Diver Courses
  • Rescue Courses
  • Divemaster Courses

Once you have certified 25 divers and have completed 20 dives in a respective specialty area, you can start teaching specialties. For example, if you have 20 drysuit dives and you have certified 25 divers, you can apply to PADI to become a Drysuit Specialty Instructor
