Scientific Diving Program

The Rockfish Divers Marine Science Foundation (termed the Rockfish Foundation in short) is a Canadian Association for Underwater Science member, and focuses on local marine science and education. The projects and programs offered through the Rockfish Foundation include (but are not limited to) underwater monitoring, population surveys, detailed dive site mapping and shore side marine education programs targeting both kids and the general public.The Rockfish Foundation's volunteer scientific diving program supports the various underwater scientific and education programs.

Diver Prerequisites
  • 18 years old
  • Have current CPR and first aid training within the last 2 years
  • Have current Emergency Oxygen Provider training within the last two years
  • Hold a PADI Rescue Diver Certification or equivalent training accepted by the World Recreational Scuba Training Council (WRSTC)

Required Materials and Equipment
  • Personal scuba kit with appropriate exposure protection for the local environment 
  • Compass
  • Knife/Diver's cutting tool
  • Slate or writing tool for communication
  • Two surface signalling devices - one audible and one visible
  • Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving and Dive Knowledge Workbook

Scientific Diver In Training Course: $350

​Certification Requirements
  • Attend knowledge development seminars and self study exercises
  • ​Complete a skill evaluation (completed in confined and open water)
  • Complete a watermanship assessment
  • Complete an open water rescue skills assessment
  • Complete an open water check out dive

Annual Scientific Diving Refresher:
  • All scientific divers must complete an annual refresher course to remain active as a scientific diver with the Rockfish Divers Marine Science Foundation.
  • The annual completion of the Scientific Diver In Training Course and completion of the CAUS Level 1 Scientific Diver Exam with a minimum score of 75% satisfies the annual scientific diver refresher requirement to continue as an active diver with the Rockfish Divers Marine Science Foundation. 

Level 1 Scientific Diver Course: $599

Certification Requirements
  • Attend knowledge development seminars on scientific diving techniques
  • Complete 5 training dives focusing on mapping, population surveys, photography and videography, search and recovery, and collections
  • Complete 4 training dives acting as a scientific dive supervisor
  • Complete the CAUS Level 1 Scientific Diver Exam with a minimum score of 75%
  • Demonstrate a total of 25 logged scientific dives
